Concussion Protocols

CONCUSSION AND RETURN TO PLAY INFO

Introducing the organization's new "My Player May Have A Concussion" packet (linked below), a resource for every family and coach in the organization. If your family ever faces a concussion, this packet is here so you do not have to navigate it alone.

The packet consolidates everything:

  • A flow chart of the full recovery process
  • Step-by-step instructions on what to do for suspected concussions
  • The Physician Clearance Form
  • The Hockey-Specific Return-to-Play Progression
  • A section on what recovery really looks like

It is a guide and a roadmap, not medical advice. Your player's own doctor always makes the final decisions and I will approve your player's return to full contact once we receive the doctor's signed documentation.

The cover page summarizes what to do if you suspect a concussion: remove the player from all activity immediately; notify the organization at safesport@arizonakachinas.com and complete the Player Injury Form on the website; and see a Medical Doctor (MD or DO) before any return to activity. Please remember these three steps.

One section deserves particular attention: "Recovery is not a straight line." A broken wrist or torn ACL heals on a fairly predictable timeline, but a concussion rarely does. The packet prioritizes patience and each player's health over any game schedule.

Stay tuned for additional training and education for our players, parents, and coaches.

The organization is dedicated to improving this process and how we support our players and families on and off the ice. Questions and feedback are always welcome.
